Rhythm and blues band makes Kodiak debut at the Rendezvous
The band Salem blends funk, hip-hop, jazz and Caribbean rhythms together to create socially conscious songs with a lively beat. Over the last seven years, Salem has toured Alaska 15 times, but tonight at the Rendezvous is its Kodiak debut. “I’ve been wanting to come over there for a long time,” said Todd Anders Johnson, drummer, singer, and founder of the band. “This time I made a point of it.” Johnson formed Sale...

City council approves one-year, 20 percent increase in rates at Kodiak Shipyard
Rates at the Kodiak Shipyard are on the rise. On Thursday night, the Kodiak City Council unanimously approved a 20 percent increase in base rates at the city-owned maintenance yard on Near Island. The vote also raises a variety of accessory fees at the yard. The increase is less than suggested by the city's port and harbor advisory board, which presented a series of rate increase options intended to put the shipya...

Amazing Nature: Spring is coming to the ocean
Winter still holds its grip on Kodiak this week. Ponds and lakes are covered in sheets of ice, and on my walk around Lake Gertrude at Abercrombie Park today I watched the water from the little creeks that feed and drain the lake trickle under glassy covers of ice. Nonetheless, spring is coming to the ocean. A plankton sample we collected on Monday had many little nauplii in it. A nauplius is the first larval stag...

Tapestry: Former Kodiak resident involved with prison ministry
Statistics can be discouraging to those who want to make a difference in the lives of prisoners. As former Kodiak resident, David Phillips, ministers to prisoners at the Palmer Correctional Center, he’s aware that 75 percent of those who are incarcerated return to prison. He finds another statistic that is encouraging: faith-based programs, such as the one he is involved with, have only a 35 percent rate of recid...

Trident Seafoods manipulated the system
Borough assemblyman Tuck Bonney called it “an extremely well thought out and organized fish grab.” Assemblyman Aaron Griffin called it “tantamount to stealing fish.” We call it a wakeup call. Early this spring, Trident Seafoods orchestrated the most blatant manipulation of Alaska’s fisheries in recent memory. It broke no laws, but this multimillion-dollar corporation robbed Kodiak workers of working hours they nee...

Tracksters eye school records
Records are meant to be broken, and Kodiak High School track and field coach Marcus Dunbar likes to remind his athletes of that. Plastered on a wall inside the foyer of KHS are two giant billboards displaying Kodiak’s records. “The whole reason I put it up there is for them to look at it,” Dunbar said. Several records might be in jeopardy this track and field season. • Senior Marley Wilkins already has the fif...
