Wandersee returns after successful eye surgery
Nolan Wandersee’s wrestling season almost ended in a blur. Two months after being diagnosed with a detached retina, Wandersee made his junior season debut last week, two weeks before the Northern Lights Conference Championships. Wandersee went 2-2, and that was without getting a good look at his opponents. “All I could see were blurs, really,” he said. Wandersee is still recovering from eye surgery and hasn’t been...

City council diverts some surplus to long-term savings

Kodiak boys finding success with only eight players
Members of Kodiak’s boys basketball team have no reason to complain about not getting enough playing time. The Bears only have eight varsity players. It’s not uncommon for a 1A school to have such a small roster, but it is almost unheard of at the 4A level. Juneau, Kodiak’s latest opponent, has 13 players, while Lathrop has 15 players. Even 3A Monroe has a 12-player roster. The small roster is by design, a strateg...

Lois Stover is unofficial ‘ambassador’ for her culture
If the Sami have a goodwill ambassador, it is Lois Stover. Wearing a traditional ghaki, Lois loves to tell about the Scandinavian aborigines of Finmark, who emigrated to Alaska in the twilight of the 19th century. Thursday, Feb. 6, is Sami National Day, but for Lois, a fourth-generation Alaska Sami, any day of the year will do for a celebration. As she talks about this part of her ancestry (she is also Yup’ik and ...
