Color run returns to the Emerald Isle
The inaugural Splash of Color 5K was so popular last year that Angela Graham had no choice but to bring it back this year. “We were asked to make sure we were doing it again,” said Graham, one of the organizers of the event. The second edition of the Splash of Color 5K is 2 p.m. Saturday. The run starts at the Women’s Bay Fire Department. Last year’s event exceeded expectations. Graham went in hoping to raise $2,0...

Alaska Science Forum: Late summer arrives in the boreal forest
It's early August, 118 miles from the Arctic Circle. Time for a walk to work. The last time I wrote about hiking through the North Campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, summer was a puppy crashing into your shin. Now it has a white muzzle. I note this maturity while moving through a nice chunk of boreal forest in the mile between my workplace and my home. For a lot of reasons, I'm lucky to be able to commu...

Letter to the Editor: Austerman retreating from decorum ordinance
Editor: It has come to my attention that Carol Austerman is now retreating from the decorum ordinance and is saying that everyone “misinterpreted” what the assembly was trying to do and, golly gee, this was just about protecting staff. While investigating this issue, I listened to the audio of every single borough meeting – regular meetings and work sessions – from May 1 to July 31. Not only did I not hear any att...

Letter to the Editor: Stutes is the person for District 32
Letter to the Editor, Here are a few of the reasons why I support Louise Stutes to represent our community in Juneau. 1. I went to the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meetings when the "Roll Cart" issue was being discussed. Ms. Stutes kept bringing up the issue of the bears and how the roll carts were not "bear proof". She expressed her concerns over the cost of the new garbage pick up plan and making the burden fa...

KHS swim season starts
The ringleader for the Kodiak High School swimming program was missing Monday, but that didn’t stop the team from beginning the 2014 season. Head coach John Lindquist spent the day traveling back to Kodiak from his summer home in Washington state, which left Erik Hanson and Dave Horne in charge of first day duties at the Kodiak Community Pool. Hanson led the team in a 20-minute yoga workout, while Horne took care ...
