City council diverts some surplus to long-term savings
Kodiak has socked away almost a million dollars for a rainier day. On Thursday night, the Kodiak City Council approved a budget amendment that diverts $921,584 from the city's general fund to its enhancement fund. The transfer, required by city code, represents half of the city's general fund surplus at the end of the 2013 fiscal year, which concluded June 30. The enhancement fund was created in 1997 with a balanc...

Kodiak boys finding success with only eight players
Members of Kodiak’s boys basketball team have no reason to complain about not getting enough playing time. The Bears only have eight varsity players. It’s not uncommon for a 1A school to have such a small roster, but it is almost unheard of at the 4A level. Juneau, Kodiak’s latest opponent, has 13 players, while Lathrop has 15 players. Even 3A Monroe has a 12-player roster. The small roster is by design, a strateg...

Lois Stover is unofficial ‘ambassador’ for her culture
If the Sami have a goodwill ambassador, it is Lois Stover. Wearing a traditional ghaki, Lois loves to tell about the Scandinavian aborigines of Finmark, who emigrated to Alaska in the twilight of the 19th century. Thursday, Feb. 6, is Sami National Day, but for Lois, a fourth-generation Alaska Sami, any day of the year will do for a celebration. As she talks about this part of her ancestry (she is also Yup’ik and ...

Charge filed for gun in auditorium
A Kodiak woman is facing a misdemeanor charge for taking a gun into the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium in November. It’s been two months since the incident occurred, but the case was held up due to case law research, police chief Ronda Wallace said. According to court documents, Suzan Hailey, 45, is facing one count of fourth-degree weapons misconduct for allegedly bringing a gun into a school on Nov. 19. Hailey is t...

Excessive administration burdens teachers
To the Editor: In recent years I’ve been alarmed to discover how few Kodiak teachers are happy in their jobs. Previously unflappable and dedicated people are worn down from increased administrative demands (frequently but not exclusively related to the changing grading policies in the middle and high schools). Others are discouraged by friction with the administration and a lack of voice in decisions affecting edu...
