SB21 sets a bad precedent for the state
To the Editor: I am very disconcerted that Representative Austerman voted for SB 21, the oil giveaway that hands over $1 billion next year to oil companies with no guarantee of new production or oil in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Even more perplexing was the lack of objection to the conflict of interest presented by permitting two senators, Kevin Meyer and Peter Micciche, who are also Conoco Phillips employees, to ...

KEA presents green energy success for Earth Day
On Earth Day, the Kodiak Electric Association turned in a report that would make even a Berkley environmentalist happy. At the cooperative's annual meeting, 250 Kodiak residents learned that 95.7 percent of their power over the previous year was generated from wind or water. That mark means Kodiak has met its long-term goal: generate 95 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. "The environment's ...

Power outage cause by snow buildup
Sunday night’s power outage was caused by snow buildup on transmission lines from Terror Lake, KEA CEO Darron Scott confirmed Monday. “At times, one of the wires gets too close to one of the other wires, and that causes it to shut down,” he said. The snow was automatically cleared during the shutdown, but because Terror Lake was supplying Kodiak’s electricity at the time, the entire Kodiak electrical grid lost pow...

Outdoor Kodiak: Spring snow teaches us to be prepared when hiking
A glance out the window revealed a scattering of low dark clouds beneath a higher gray layer. The brush was moving a little and there was a light chop on the water. In the corner of the window the thermometer reported 34 degrees. Hmmph … Not too bad on the Kodiak weather scale. Time for a quick walk? After too many indoor hours I couldn’t resist it. Donning gloves and hat and a suitable coat, I paused over my choi...
