Kodiak softball faces tough schedule
The softball schedule makers didn’t do Kodiak favors for the 2013 season. The Bears will play six of their 10 Northern Lights Conference games away from East Addition Park. That’s tough for a team searching for its first small school state tournament appearance in three years. Kodiak plays two of its four home conference games Friday and Saturday against Soldotna. The Bears entertain Houston for a two-game set ...

Chaplain stays on front lines
Navy Cmdr. Michael Williams, a chaplain from Kodiak, risks his life every day in Afghanistan. He doesn’t carry a rifle, but to Marines who need counseling or spiritual guidance, he’s a lifesaver. Williams is serving a one-year tour as an overseas chaplain for Regimental Combat Team 7 in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. This is Williams’ second overseas tour in a war zone — he served in Iraq from 2007 to 2008 — and...

School board passes thinner budget
Following four and a half months of debate and behind-the-scenes work, the Kodiak Island Borough School District has a budget for 2014. On Monday night, the school board unanimously approved a $48.7 million budget for the 2013-2014 school year. The budget is thinner than this year’s by more than $600,000 the result of cost-cutting measures that came in the wake of federal budget cuts. The budget is not yet final —...

Study: Slowed vaccinations lead to more Alaskans at risk
A new study released by the state’s epidemiology department has revealed alarming an alarming trend in Alaska newborns’ vaccination rates. According to the study, whose results were released Monday, one-third of all Alaska parents delayed or avoided shots for their newborn infants in 2011. That’s a sharp rise from 2009, when 23.8 percent of parents put off their baby’s shots. “It is something we’re alarmed about,”...

Speak To Me Communication Therapy helps people learn to communicate
Blocks, mats, art projects, trucks, dollhouse pieces and a bean table fill the playroom in Tina Clumpner’s office. While she might be a kid at heart, the toys aren’t for her. They’re for the kids who need her help. Clumpner is a speech language pathologist who runs her own business, Speak To Me Communication Therapy, now in its second year. Her job as a speech language pathologist is to work with children and a...

SB21 sets a bad precedent for the state
To the Editor: I am very disconcerted that Representative Austerman voted for SB 21, the oil giveaway that hands over $1 billion next year to oil companies with no guarantee of new production or oil in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Even more perplexing was the lack of objection to the conflict of interest presented by permitting two senators, Kevin Meyer and Peter Micciche, who are also Conoco Phillips employees, to ...
