Whalefest draws closer
Spectators crowded the Kodiak waterfront last week to catch a glimpse of a pair of orcas accompanied by a calf. The first significant whale sighting of the year means Kodiak’s annual spring cetacean celebration — Kodiak Whale Fest — isn’t far away, and the event’s new logo is making a splash. Designed by retired Kodiak High School biology teacher Stacy Studebaker, the logo shows a pod of gray whales emblazoned wit...

Dimond shoots past Kodiak
Dimond displayed Friday night why it is the second-best girls basketball team in the state. Behind a perimeter-shooting clinic and a near lockdown defense, the Lynx rolled to a 48-38 nonconference win over third-ranked Kodiak at Kodiak High School that closed the regular season for both squads. Kodiak, which once stood at 17-0, lost six of its final eight games to finish the regular season with a 19-6 record. Th...

Kodiak Middle School team takes state in Battle of the Books
A team of Kodiak sixth-graders just won the right to say they’re the best readers in the state. Kodiak Middle School’s team won the Battle of the Books competition held last week. Multi-use path is a luxury
To the Editor: The idea of a multi-use path is nice but not a nice idea now. It's neither a priority nor a necessity. If Juneau can tighten its financial belt, why can't the city of Kodiak? This requested project by some folks is a luxury that neither the city nor the taxpayers can afford. The 10' wide, 1.3-mile path would commence at Pier 2 on Shelikof Ave. and terminate at Deadman's Curve. The city needs to sto...

Fish Factor: Projected salmon catch numbers up
More wild salmon from Alaska will make its way to world markets this year if forecasts hold true for the 2013 season. State salmon managers are projecting a catch of nearly 179 million fish, 30 percent more than the 2012 harvest of 127 million salmon. Pushing the higher catch is a robust return of pink salmon that could yield a harvest of 118 million fish, 73 percent more than last summer’s harvest of 68 million ...

Sometimes, you can't identify a flower without a program. Take the case of this "garden geranium," one of the most common potted plants in America with over 200 varieties. t's actually a pelargonium and calling it by its Latin name (Pelargonium x hortorum) will help avoid any cases of mistaken identity. Garden Gate: Collecting free flowers
If you like the idea of free flowers, listen up. This is the best time of year for starting a fresh batch of geraniums. By snipping a few cuttings from your, or a friend’s overwintered plant, you’ll be rewarded with cheerful displays of pink, white, salmon or red flowers. Before you grab a pair of shears and go knocking on your neighbor’s door though, mentally prepare yourself. Not all geraniums come through win...
