Shocked by logging activities in Chiniak
Three weeks ago I had the great pleasure of coming to Kodiak with my wife and two young children to visit my father-in-law, who is a longtime Chiniak resident. We fished, took in the sights. In all, it was a very enjoyable time for all of us. Imagine my shock when I came across miles and miles of island that had been clear-cut, with trucks going up and down the road every 20 minutes filled with freshly downed tree...

Alaska State Troopers: Aug. 27
Aug. 22 At 9:05 p.m., a Kodiak man reported several items were stolen from the vacant lot next to Walmart. A 55-gallon burn barrel he used to dispose of paperwork, two cinder blocks and three “construction candles” were taken sometime in the last week. Troopers searched the area and found one of the blocks and the candles, and did not find the remaining block and the barrel. The taken items were valued at approxim...

An inquiry about the word quarry
One word that seemed to rock headlines and the P&Z public comment period was “quarry.” Recently, the word “quarry” has come to connote, for lack of a better word, “oops.” A big “oops,” as in, “Oops, I’m sorry I destroyed half of a trail in a conservation-zoned piece of public property.” “Quarry” is a homonym that can confuse word historians. In one sense, “quarry” means, as it does here, a place to excavate rocks;...

Stage and Screen: See "Ricky and the Flash" for the music; not the acting
The promos say “Get Ready for Ricki.” Unfortunately, the film “Ricki and the Flash” (2015) doesn’t live up to the hyperbole imbedded in the suggestion that you’ll need to prepare for either Ricki the character or “Ricki and the Flash” the movie. For the first time in my many years of admiration for Meryl Streep I was disappointed. Not just a little disappointed – very disappointed. Streep plays Ricki Rendazza a mi...

435 STUDENTS VISITED: KMS teachers, staff start school in positive way
It’s a story that delivers a smile. On Aug. 19, Kodiak Middle School Principal Jethro Jones and Assistant Principal Damon Hargraves led 14 teachers, 3 paraprofessionals, and a mental health clinician as they visited the homes of all 435 KMS students, a feat they accomplished in one day. There was a little skepticism in the beginning, but thanks to modern technology and some preparation, they pulled it off, Jones s...
