Outdoor Kodiak: The long season
Waterfowl season closes at sundown this Thursday, Jan. 22. But it’s no reason to put away your guns until fall! January 23 marks the start of my favorite hunting “season.” In truth there’s no closed season for snowshoe hare on Kodiak and no bag limit, but the next three months are my favorite period for hunting. You’ll encounter virtually no one else out and about, and the vast majority of bears are down for their...

Dear Editor: I am asking my fellow citizens to fly the flag in support of the efforts to achieve Indefinite postponement of the proposed Borough Code Revision, Title 16, 17 &18. Please fly Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes, and mighty Symbol of our land. Fly her proudly and with proper decorum. Wear a flag pin or carry a Veterans Day Flag. Dress in Red, White and Blue. If ever there was an issue regarding your righ...

We are Kodiak
Lately a have spent every minute I can at the Borough meetings. Others, as well are watching and the common question is what does it take to get our representatives to represent the will of the Kodiak People? I really haven’t got an answer. Several months ago one on the work board asked that I not share their name that they were a part of the code plan. Now I know why! One from Ouzinkie identified himself as one i...

Teeing Off: Seattle mounts historic comeback for the ages
Improbable. Incredible. Implausible. Impossible. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe Sunday’s NFC Championship game. I prefer unbelievable. If you are a sports fan, you know the story by now. The Seahawks, down 19-7 with 3 minutes, 52 seconds left in their season, mounted a historic comeback, one for the ages. Seattle scored three touchdowns in the final five minutes of game action,...

Hunter wins contest with 109-point buck
The winner of the 2015 Eric Lochman Big Buck Contest took home a prize worth $2,500 and bragging rights for taking home the biggest deer rack in Unit 8, all of the islands in the Kodiak Archipelago, in the last year. Mack's Sport Shop has held the contest for more than 25 years, and 46 racks were entered into the contest this year. Although that was lower than historic highs, it was higher than last year's 23 entr...

Bears’ defense sweeps Moose
Charmaine Fabricante didn’t have any pre-game jitters before her first varsity start. And she didn’t have any in-game jitters either. Kodiak’s senior guard was all over the court in leading her team past Palmer, 38-23, in a Northern Lights Conference girls basketball Friday at Kodiak High. She started again on Saturday, and again Kodiak beat Palmer, this time 43-25. Fabricante waited her entire career to start a v...

Garden Gate: Decide early for your spring garden
While it may seem a tad early, there are some major decisions that you should be making about this spring’s garden. For example, are you adding box-in raised beds or turning back some lawn for landscape gardens? Do you plan to buy shrubs or trees this season? Do you need to set aside space for compost bins or a chicken coop? What about your annual beds? Do you plan to buy bedding plants or grow them from seed? Do ...
