In 2012, Kodiak residents pledged more than $33,000 to local nonprofits in the campaign.
Thirteen organizations in Kodiak signed up to participate in the campaign in 2013.

And not simply extended family who never understood my craft. (“Writer, eh? Well, at least you’ll be qualified to fill out your own unemployment forms.”)
Nor is it limited to my mother, who, while a journalist once herself, always viewed...

Another Day in Paradise: Leaving Our Mark Behind Sometimes I wonder if the world is against me. If I make plans to go hiking on my next day off, I do so knowing that no matter what the forecast says, when I roll out of bed that day it will probably be raining sideways and blowing sixty knots. Or that nice new powder snow that would be fun to learn to cross-country ski on has fell victim to a rise in temperatures long enough to absorb enough rain that when the bo...

16-year-old wins third big buck title Stephanie Blondin defended her title and took home her third win in this year’s Eric Lochman Big Buck Contest. “I like that a lot of guys don’t think a girl can win,” Blondin said. The 16-year-old took first place for her buck in 2006 and again in 2012. Blondin grew up hunting in Larsen Bay with her family. Living in a village gives her plenty of time to practice, and plenty of time to develop secret hunting spots...
