Discovering remnants of Kodiak’s World War II structures
With the last U.S. World War I veteran passing in 2011, living memories of World War II are rapidly fading. Soon, just the physical remains of the conflict will be left behind. Kodiak is home to an astounding number of structures built during World War II. Reports indicate that $17 million dollars was spent in the construction of Kodiak’s bases. That is approximately $244 million in today’s dollars. We see evidenc...

It had reportedly been shot several times with a handgun. “Deer season does not open until Oct. 1, so that’s the issue we’re running into,” AWT Sgt. That's a fun but hard-to-answer question that Derek Sikes recently pondered in response to writer and wilderness guide Michael Engelhard. I was a ...

Teeing Off: Kodiak soccer speaks Spanish on the pitch
Hola, como estas? That is pretty much the extent of my Spanish vocabulary, as I wasn’t the most astute student in foreign language classes. If it wasn’t for Megan — after 15 years I have forgotten her last name, but I do remember she had blonde hair and was taller than me — I would have not passed high school Spanish. She set across from me at the same table and let allowed me to look at her answers. Mahalo, Megan...

The Last Hurrah
To the Editor, Last Saturday, May 16, was the last hurrah for my ALS Walk4Life. Once again, the turnout was discouraging and, therefore, will not be repeated next year. I want to thank everyone who supported my efforts for the past two years: the walkers, my steadfast volunteers, Kodiak Print Masters, Walmart, Safeway, KMXT, St. Mary’s Catholic School, all my friends who posted my public service announcements. Sep...
