ESS volleyball team enjoys success in third season
As Karluk’s one-man volleyball team, David Reft spends a lot of time in front of a wall. He bounces a ball off a wall. He sets a ball off a wall. He bumps a ball off a wall. It is easy to understand his excitement when he leaves Karluk — a town of about 37 residents, 88 miles southwest of Kodiak city — to join the rest of his teammates on Kodiak’s Emerging Small Schools mix-6 volleyball team. His teammates also co...

Comedy this weekend
It will be “a good night for laughs” in Kodiak on Saturday. That’s how Mike Amberg is advertising his comedy show this weekend. Mike Amberg told the Mirror he moved to Kodiak last year, and this will be his first show in Kodiak, but if all goes well, he’ll hopefully do more. He’s worked as a clown at children’s hospitals, and he worked in a circus as a clown for two seasons. Amber describes the show as “an evening...

After church, they enjoyed a Sunday dinner, often with guests, napped, visited, took a ride and by six o’clock, they grabbed their Bibles and headed back to sanctuary for Sunday evening services. By mid-week the faithful were in church again for refreshment and rejuvenation. Their minds and hearts were challen...

Kodiak wrestling reloads for new season
Veteran wrestling coach Pat Costello doesn’t beat around the bush when assessing Kodiak’s 2014-2015 team. “It will be a growing season,” the Bears’ assistant coach and former head coach said. If kids progress like they have in the past we should be OK. We won’t be a strong contender, but we will be OK.” That is what happens when a team only returns three state place winners from a year ago, and loses several key c...

If you think the truck that caught fire Wednesday on Shelikof Street is part of a drill for firefighters, think again.
