Port Lions graduate Katie Strong had a strong showing in the 1,500-meter run Friday at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

The New Mexico State University junior placed second in a field of eight with a time of 4 minutes, 57.87 seconds. Unattached runner Minori Hayakari won with a time of 4:49.24.

New Mexico State begins competing in the Western Athletic Conference Championships on May 14 in Orem, Utah.

Running

Former Kodiak High running star Abby Reed finished 81st in the Tacoma City Marathon Sunday in Tacoma, Wash.

Reed covered the 26.1 miles in 3:33:40.
