The Kodiak Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center invites the public to Coffee with a Ranger, a weekly informal discussion, 3 to 4 p.m. today. This week the talk revolves around the story of the whale skeleton in the visitor center.

The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce invites members to a Business After Hours meeting 6 to 8 p.m. today at Blue Planet Eco-Charters, slip B31 in St. Paul Harbor.

New office open house

The Native Village of Afognak is hosting an open house from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today to show off its new offices at 323 Carolyn St. in Kodiak.

Silver salmon derby

The Kodiak silver salmon derby begins today and runs through Sept. 30. Tickets are available at Cy’s Sporting Goods, Mack’s Sport Shop and any Lions Club member. The weigh station at Cy’s Sporting Goods is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Sunday, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Taste test

The Kodiak Harbor Convention Center hosts a cold-smoked salmon taste test 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event is put on by the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center.

Free shooting for kids

Monashka Bay shooting range, in conjunction with Mack’s Sport Shop and the VFW, hosts a day at the range 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It’s an opportunity to try more than 50 of the latest firearms in a fun atmosphere. Ammunition tickets can be purchased with cash or check at the range, and kids 14 and under can shoot .22s for free. The VFW offers a lunch special for $9.95.
