A new scam involving so-called “toner phoners” is circulating in Kodiak.

The scam is a new version of a traditional office supplies fraud. A caller obtains the name and address of an employee, then sends unordered supplies. The business is then billed — often at exorbitant rates. The scammer trusts the bills will be lost in a paperwork shuffle.

In Kodiak’s case, the latest incidents have involved callers masquerading as Xerox employees providing printer and copier toner. Horizon Lines has reported receiving the scam, and other business are suspected to be at risk.

Adam Harkness, a spokesman for the Better Business Bureau in Alaska, said he wasn’t familiar with the latest scam but added, “We find that a lot of times, scams like this move around the country. I’m sure if we see one, there will be more.”
