Dan Van Mun has been building high-end custom homes for 40 years.

With his new business VM Enterprizes LLC., he will bring his 40 years of expertise to Kodiak.

VM Enterprizes is a full-service contracting company that does design, consulting, permits, additions and remodels, carpentry, joinery, paint and finish, windows, doors and roof repairs.

Van Mun moved to Kodiak with his wife Linda five years ago. After arriving, he started working commercial construction jobs for the Clarion Company. After he was injured on the job last year, he decided he wanted to branch out and start his own company working on houses instead of commercial projects.

“The houses certainly need it around here,” Van Mun said. “I do more custom quality residential work anyway, and I wanted to go back to what I know.”

This is not Van Mun’s first time starting a company. In Wisconsin, where he grew up, he started Rainbow Insulators Inc. He later started VM Woodworking in Wyoming. He spent the last six months learning what it takes to start a company in Kodiak today.

“I had to relearn how to start a company,” he said. “I’d done it in the past many long years ago.”

For now, Van Mun will be working jobs on his own, but he hopes to expand after he does more market research and establishes his company in the Kodiak community.

“I want to get the company established so eventually I can hire a few people,” he said. “I know a few younger folks I’d like to hire and train.”

Van Mun likes to train people that are new in the field, so he can give them a set of skills they can take with them in life. “I’ve always hired some younger people in life,” he said. “I give them a set of skills so they can go on and make a choice.”

Van Mun has also had to learn a new set of skills to get his business up and running — technology.

At the beginning of the year Van Mun didn’t know much about computers. Today he is versed in using an iPhone, iPad and Facebook page to promote his business.

“I didn’t know a single thing about computers,” he said. “You can’t be in business anymore without a computer. It’s a continuing education for me.”

Van Mun has already acquired his professional contractor’s licenses, but plans to continue earning different certifications.
