The Cincinnati Reds selected Monroe Catholic’s Scooter Bynum in the Major League Baseball Draft, making him the only Alaskan picked in this year’s draft.

The Reds took Bynum in the 18th round on Saturday.

According to the Alaska American Legion website, Bynum is only the second non-pitcher from Alaska to be drafted in the top 20 rounds. Anchorage third baseman Trajan Langdon was drafted in the sixth round in 1994.

Bynum told the website he turned down the contract offer by the Reds and will instead will attend and play for Arizona Western College in the fall. He is going to play for the Fairbanks Goldpanners of the Alaska Baseball League this summer.
