The Coast Guard suspended the search for the missing crewman from the 58-foot fishing vessel Advantage after more than an 18-hour search near Kodiak that covered 1,400 square miles.

The Coast Guard rescued three people from the 58-foot fishing vessel Advantage after it sank 14 miles southeast of Kodiak Island, early Friday morning.

A Providence Medical Center spokesperson confirmed the vessel's skipper Leif Bolan, later died at the hospital.

The search started when the Coast Guard 17th District command center received an emergency radio beacon notification from the fishing vessel just after midnight on Friday.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Kodiak launched at 1:24 a.m. after several unsuccessful attempts to contact the Advantage crew by radio.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene at 1:34 a.m., and located three crewmembers floating in a life raft.

The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer to make contact with the crew, check on their condition and brief them on the hoisting operation, said Petty Officer 1st Class Sara Francis. The helicopter crew hoisted the crew to safety just before 2 a.m.

The three people that were rescued were taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center to be treated for symptoms of hypothermia. They were not wearing survival suits, Francis said.

Throughout the day the Jayhawk and HC-130 Hercules crews took turns searching the area for the missing crewman, identified as Jaime Gallegos.

The Coast Guard has not released any names of the crewmembers.

The cause has not yet been determined. The Coast Guard reported clear skies and two- to three-foot seas on scene.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
