Former Kodiak High School running stars battle the Bears’ current crop of cross country runners Friday.

The annual alumni run begins at 6 p.m. in Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park.

Kodiak coach Marcus Dunbar is expecting some heavy hitters in the field, including former state champion Dylan Anthony and Cory Pena.

“If we could get all alumni together at the same race there would be no contest,” Dunbar said. “Both on the boys and girls side we have graduated some very good people over the years.”

The race is traditionally a way for younger athletes to ease into the season.

Kodiak’s first official meet is Monday at the Nikiski Class Races on the Kenai Peninsula and is followed by a race at Colony on Tuesday.

“It is a chance to run our course for the first time with a little pressure situation,” Dunbar said.

“For a lot of people it is about learning about pace. Typically people will go out way too fast and it is nice to get that out of the way.”
