KODIAK — The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced that the federal Pacific cod season will open on schedule at noon Thursday, Sept. 1.

The state-waters Pacific cod season in the Chignik management area will operate at the same time as the federal season in the central Gulf of Alaska.

Vessel operators participating in the Chignik cod season must deliver their catch before beginning the federal fishing.

All cod harvested in state waters before the opening of the federal season must be delivered no later than 48 hours after the federal opening.

All vessels must be registered with ADF&G before participating in the parallel cod seasons. Registrations can be done in person or by fax at the ADF&G office in Kodiak.

Vessels participating in the state cod season west of 144 degrees west longitude must have a vessel monitoring system approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Vessels using jig and hand troll gear are exempt from the requirement.

For more information, contact the ADF&G’s Kodiak office at 486-1840.
