Has the code of etiquette changed?

To the editor:

I have recently attended three events at which the Coast Guard color guard participated. I was left wondering if the Code of Etiquette for respect of our flag has been changed or abandoned. Two of these events were indoors and no one around me had their hand over their heart as the colors passed by.

At the Crab Festival parade, I saw no men or boys remove their hats and no women or children paused for a moment with their hand over heart to pay respects to the flag of our country.

“Hats off! The flag is passing by,” was a familiar poem to every child of my generation.

You are so right, Margaret! Thanks for the reminder...I was sitting in my truck as they went by and my hand on my heart...without any regard to any others...as I was taught and never thought about it. Parents ought to teach their children love and patriotism for our country in these fine tributes!

Thank you Margaret for your letter, I am always surprised at sports events, parades and other occasions where few salute the moving flag, as I was taught. Perhaps if it started with coaches and parents, the tradition would be honored. Laurie
