The prep gridiron season begins today and continues Saturday with a slate of games.
The first week is always the hardest to predict, but like always, I’m going to give it the old college try.
This is the fourth year of my high school pigskin picks. Each year I’m well over a .700 winning percentage. I’m hoping to improve to an .800 percentage this go around.
Just like all the other years, I only pick medium and small school games. I’ll leave the large schools to somebody else.
Here are the Week 1 picks:
Sitka at Ketchikan — This game represents why I don’t like picking games the first week of the season. Wolves eat Kings, so ... WOLVES 24, KINGS 17.
Juneau at Thunder Mountain — Each year Thunder Mountain gets a bit better, but this is not the season it will knock off cross-town rival ... CRIMSON BEARS 45, FALCONS 21.
Barrow at Monroe — Barrow is ranked to begin the season and were last year’s small schools state runner-up and Monroe got smoked by Kodiak last year ... WHALERS 35, RAMS 21.
Nikiski at Delta — It’s hard to bet against a husky, but I’m going ... BULLDOGS 54, HUSKIES 7.
Homer at Eielson — Homer surprised a lot of teams last year, but they are not going to surprise many this year. That said, I still like Homer on the long road trip ... MARINERS 28, RAVENS 24.
Lathrop at Seward — Another brutal road trip. I’ll go ... MALEMUTES 48, SEAHAWKS 14.
Valdez at Houston — This Houston does not possess Andre Johnson, but should still win ... HAWKS 21, BUCCANEERS 20.
East Anchorage at Kenai — What will Kenai do without AJ Hull? Not much in this one ... THUNDERBIRDS 14, KARDINALS 13.
Colony at Skyview — Colony only won two games last season and will pick up an early victory this season ... KNIGHTS 24, PANTHERS 10.
Palmer at Soldotna — This should be the game of the week, as both school’s are ranked. I’m giving the edge to the home team ... STARS 27, MOOSE 24.
West Anchorage JV at Kodiak — Losing to a junior varsity team in a home opener would not be embarrassing. The Bears don’t have to worry, though ... BEARS 35, EAGLES 24.
