Lathrop dashed Kodiak's state championship hopes early Thursday morning.

Kodiak fell behind early and never led in a 56-42 loss to Lathrop in the opening-round of the 4A state girls basketball tournament.

The Bears (20-8) fall to Friday's consolation game at 8 a.m. against the loser of the Dimond/West Valley game. Kodiak could still get earn fourth-place, but would have to win its next two games.

Kodiak struggled to contain Lathrop's speedy guard combo of Jasmine White and Erisha Talley. White penetrated through the lane with ease and ended with a game-high 20 points, while Talley went for 15 points.

Freshman 6-foot-2 center Ruthy Hebard dominated the inside with 23 rebounds, nine points and four blocked shots for Lathrop.

Jerica Nelson and Megan Pyles supplied the offense for Kodiak. Nelson sprung for 19 points, which included three 3-pointers, while Pyles posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The two juniors were the only players to score for Kodiak in the second half.
