KODIAK LITTLE LEAGUE

Registration for the 2012 season is being held now until April 21. Tryouts will be on April 14 for Majors 11- and 12-year-olds and Juniors 13- to 15-year-olds. Tryouts will be April 21 for coach-pitch 7- and 8-year-olds and player-pitch 9- and 10-year-olds. Tryouts are mandatory. Players participating in Kingfishers can attend a 2 p.m. tryout time. Sign up at the Teen Center (next to the post office) or electronically by going to Kodiaklittleleague.com. Any player who signs up late will not be guaranteed a spot on a team. Those playing in Little League for the first time need to present a certified birth certificate at registration. All registration forms must be signed by a parent or guardian. Players who are 4 to 15 years old are eligible to participate. For more information, please call Leonard Pickett, president, at 539-2600 or Terra Cupp, secretary, at 486-8186. Volunteer positions are still open and umpires and scorekeepers are needed. Meetings are generally held on Sunday at 3 p.m.

YOUTH SOCCER

Soccer weather hotline: Please call 486-8669 after 3 p.m. on the assigned game or practice day to receive field and weather updates for that day.

AQUATICS

Exhibition event: As part of the high school track meet with Palmer, there will be a long jump event at 11 a.m. in which competitors use the swimming pool as their landing pit. This event will end around noon.

Pool closure: The swimming pool will be closed for maintenance from Tuesday, May 29, through Sunday, June 3. Work will include replacing broken/missing deck tiles, changing out filter valve.

Earth Day Triathlon will take place on Saturday, May 12, beginning at 10 a.m. There will be men’s and women’s age-group divisions and a team division. All divisions begin at the swimming pool and end at Woody Way Field. The swim is 22 laps (1 km). The run is 3.1 miles (5 km), and goes from the pool to East Elementary and back. The bike is 12.4 miles (20 km) from the pool to Pillar Creek and back to the finish at Woody Way Field.

Divisions are as follows: 1. Open-mixed team; 2. Youth team (all members 18 years old and under); 3. Individual Men 19 & under, 20-29, 30-39, 40 and over; 4. Individual Women 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40 and over.

This is a great event to help kick off spring and now is the time to start thinking of forming teams and to get in the water to begin building up endurance for the swim.

HIGH SCHOOL GYM

Indoor soccer is held in the high school gym on Sundays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Seth Minyard is the supervisor.

Volleyball: Volleyball is held in the high school gym on Mondays and Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Faaeseina Saoifanua is the volunteer supervisor.

Morning powerball is in the high school gym on Sunday from 7 to 9 a.m. and in the middle school gym on Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7:30 a.m. Paul Chervenak is in charge.

Evening powerball is Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Normally Mondays will be in the middle school and Wednesdays and Fridays in the high school. A $2 entrance fee will be charged. Powerball is for adult players who have played organized ball and for high school players aspiring to play varsity ball.

Due to scheduling conflicts, there will be no evening powerball as follows:

Friday, April 13, evening powerball is in the middle school because the high school will be hosting the Alaska student government spring conference.

Youth basketball open gym is on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is for boys and girls 15 and younger. Steve Hall is the volunteer supervisor. There is no admission fee.

TENNIS

Due to a school gymnastics unit, there is no tennis at North Star Elementary from March 18 through April 8. The contact for tennis is Steve Johnston, 486-3297.

TEEN CENTER

General hours are Monday through Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday 1 to 8 p.m.

COMMUNITY USE

Toddler play group meets every Friday, from 10 to 11 a.m. This is an opportunity for 2- to 4-year-olds to engage in gross-motor free play and to interact with other children. Bring your own balls and riding toys. Sue Knoth is the contact, and her number is 487-2949.

PKICC/KANA: Teen Center is reserved for PKICC/KANA on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. This project is a comprehensive prevention attempt to educate youths against alcohol and drugs. Open to all boys and girls from ages 9 to 19 years old. A snack is provided. Contact is Ben Achas at 481-2400.

Fil-Am fundraiser: The Filipino American Association of Kodiak will hold a fundraising for a Philippine Disaster Relief for Earthquake and Typhoon Victims at the Teen Center on Sunday, April 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold for $12 each. Dinner combination will be served and will consist of pork/chicken adobo, rice, pansit (Filipino noodles), and Filipino dessert. Contact is Ben Achas at 942-3226.

RACQUETBALL

Early riser racquetball: Saturday at the Teen Center from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 8 a.m. For information call Craig Johnson at 486-4826.

General court hours: Monday through Thursday noon to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday 1 to 7 p.m.
