LABOR DAY HOLIDAY

Labor Day, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, celebrates the contribution workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of this country. It was first observed in 1882. This year Labor Day is held on Monday, Sept. 5, and all Parks and Recreation activities and indoor facilities are closed.

ADVISORY BOARD

A Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 1, in the Baranof Park office. The agenda is as follows: 1. Roll Call; 2. Public Testimony on Non-Agenda Items; 3. Approval of Agenda; 4. Approval of Meeting Minutes; 5. Discussion Items; 6. Director’s Report; 7. Board Comments; 8. Adjournment.

Advisory board members are Gerie Botz, John Butler, Marcus Dunbar, Amy Fogle, Natasha Hayden, Derrik Magnuson, Ken McCarty, Richard Walker and Jim Willis.

Parks and Recreation Advisory Board studies issues and makes recommendations to the city council on matters relating to parks and recreation. Members serve three-year terms. This is a volunteer board and members are appointed by the mayor. SENIOR DRIBBLERS

BASKETBALL

Boys and Girls Senior Dribbler Basketball regular season runs from Aug. 29 through Sept. 27, and is followed by the playoffs starting Sept. 29.

All boys and girls in eighth through 12th grades are eligible. Varsity players are eligible to play only in the upper division. Senior Boys will have two divisions: the Junior division is for boys in eighth through tenth grades and the Senior division is for 10th through 12th grades.

AQUATICS

Fall schedule: Effective Wednesday, Sept. 7, evening open swim on Monday, Wednesday and Friday will not begin until 7 p.m.

Effective Thursday, Aug. 18, morning lap is changed to accommodate the high school swim program. From Aug.18 through Nov. 4, morning lap will be held from 5:30 to 6:45 a.m. but will only have two lanes from 6:15 to 6:45 a.m.

HIGH SCHOOL GYM

Indoor soccer is in the high school gym on Sundays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Volleyball: Volleyball is held Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesdays 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 5 to 8 p.m. Faaeseina Saoifanua is the supervisor.

Morning powerball is on Sunday from 7 to 9 a.m. and Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7:30 a.m. in the high school gym. Paul Chervenak is in charge.

Powerball is for adult players who have played organized ball and for high school players aspiring to play varsity ball.

ROLLER HOCKEY

Adult roller hockey is Wednesday and Sunday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Baranof Park ice rink. Men and women over 15 years old welcome. Contact Courtney Webster at 486-8671 for more information.

Youth roller hockey is on Sundays and runs from 6 to 7 p.m. It is for all boys and girls 15 and under. Full hockey gear is required. Those interested in playing or helping out please contact Courtney at 654-4928.

TEEN CENTER

General hours are Monday through Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday 1 to 8.

COMMUNITY USE

Infant/toddler play group meets every Sunday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This is to provide socialization for infants and toddlers (from 1 month to 4 years old) as well as enhancement of motor skills through playtime with other children. Bring your own balls and riding toys. Kristen Frank, 942-4798, and Michelle Pagsolingan, 619-917-1402 are in charge.

RACQUETBALL

Early riser racquetball: Saturday at the Teen Center from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 8 a.m. For information call Craig Johnson at 486-4826.

General court hours: Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 1 to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

FALL ACTIVITIES

Boy Dribblers Basketball begins in October. Registration is at the Teen Center. Teen Center hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Registration fee is $20. Registration deadline is Thursday, Oct. 6. Registration fee after Oct. 6 is $25.

All boys who register and attend team selection will be placed on a team. Boys are divided into three leagues determined by the grade they enter in the fall. Divisions are second and third grades, fourth and fifth grades and sixth and seventh grades. Teams play one or two games per week and practice on Saturday. All games and practices are at North Star gym. A player may move up one grade (including boys going into first grade) to compete in a higher division if a parent or close relative will coach their team.

Player testing and team selection of all players will be held at North Star gym. All players will be tested so coaches have some objective criteria to aid in the team selection process.

Second- and third-grade boys: player testing and team selection on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Fourth- and fifth-grade boys: player testing on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and team selection on Monday, Oct. 11, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Sixth- and seventh-grade boys: Player testing on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. and team selection on Monday, Oct. 10, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Practices start Tuesday, Oct. 11. Games begin Tuesday, Oct. 18. Playoff tournament will begin the middle of November, and conclude Tuesday, Nov. 22. Dribblers for girls is held after New Year’s.

City league basketball is a league for adult and high-school-age players. The season is divided into two halves with seven regular-season games and a tournament scheduled for each half. The first half begins the second week of November and includes a single-elimination Christmas Tournament. The second half runs to the last week of February and concludes with a double-elimination play-off tournament that ends around the middle of March. Games are played in the middle school, high school and North Star Elementary gyms. Teams are divided by competitive level into four divisions, Open, A, B and C, with the Open Division being the most competitive. Approximately 300 players participated last year.

Player fees for the season are $70 for Open Division players, $55 for A, B and C players and $35 for students. Team sponsor fees are in addition to player fees are $440 for Open, $340 for A, B and C and $150 for students (all players are full-time students). If player fees and sponsor fees are combined, Open teams pay $1,000, A, B and C pay $800 and student (all players are full-time students) teams pay $450.

City league volleyball: The season is divided into two halves. The first half begins the first week in November and ends with a double-elimination tournament in the first two weeks of December. The second half runs Jan. 3 through mid-March and ends with a double-elimination tournament before spring break.

The A division is for upper-level players, men or women, and plays games on Tuesday night. Fees for A division are $30 per player.

B and C divisions are co-ed with a minimum of 2 women on the court. Teams play Monday or Wednesday nights. B division fees are $25 per player and C division is $15 per player. Games are played at the high school gym. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. each night.

Baranof Park ice rink opens Nov. 14. The ice skating schedule includes free skating times for public skating, hockey and broomball. There are also figure skating and hockey clinics held during Christmas and spring breaks. A youth hockey league runs from mid-January through March. A learn-to-skate program is held in two five-week sessions beginning in early January. For more information contact Ice Rink Manager Courtney Webster at 481-3881.
