The 2014 swimming and diving team has 48 athletes — the most since John Lindquist took over the program in the early 2000s.
“The program has developed itself,” he said. “Kids hear about what we do, and I don’t think kids are afraid to work.”
The team has two practices a day, and Lindquist said close to 30 students show up for non-mandatory early-morning dips in the pool.
The breakdown: 20 girls and 28 boys.
Kodiak’s football team, normally around 70 students, has 40 players on its roster.
“I’m not to far off just with my boys team,” Lindquist said. “I’m knocking on the door.”
Kodiak has three home meets on the 2014 schedule against Soldotna (Aug. 29-30), Homer (Sept. 12-13) and state power Dimond (Oct. 10-11).
Dimond has won the last five boys’ state titles, while the girls were runners-up last season to Juneau-Douglas.
Kodiak’s away schedule features the Homer Invitational (Sept. 5-6), the SoHi Pentathlon and tri-meet (Sept. 19-20) and the Valley Invitational (Oct. 17-18).
The Region III meet is in Soldotna (Oct.31-Nov. 1), while the state meet returns to Bartlett High School (Nov. 7-8) after being in Juneau last season.
