Shoppers will get a 7 percent break within Kodiak City limits Saturday.

The city of Kodiak has held the sales tax-free day on the first Saturday in March since 2009 as a way to encourage people to support local brick-and-mortar stores.

A few categories are exempt, including items sold by the city and rentals for more than one day.

“We’re just trying to get the word out there so people don’t forget our local retailers,” Kodiak Chamber of Commerce director Trevor Brown said.

In a survey returned by 25 retailers after the 2013 event, most reported a sales boost, with 20 percent responding that their sales more than doubled over recent Saturdays, Brown said.
