Think small for island-wide ferry

To the editor:

Holy pork, Batman! That’s right, Robin, it’s a 263-foot marine ferry with deepwater docks all around the island. Is that the smallest you can imagine? I was trying to get interest in an island-wide ferry system several years ago and never dreamed of anything so huge. From a business perspective it’s pretty obvious that would never fly, even with a generous subsidy.

All it really needs to be is a system that would allow residents and visitors to get to and from the villages, or just to see the island. How about a 40-foot cabin cruiser with room for 10 or 15 people? How about a consortium of extant boats of different sizes that can commit to a run now and then?

Let’s get this idea under control and maybe we can find a solution.

Another nice convenience, but at extraordinary cost to taxpayers. Let private industry decide if this makes ordinary, common business sense. IF it does, private investors will provide it. Hasn't happened so far, because it is not financially feasible.
