To the editor:

Why are federal bid contracts to Alaska Native Corporations referred to by critics in Washington, D.C., by a disparaging name? Why don’t these multimillion-, even billion-dollar corporations truly help Native Alaskans? The original intent was to help “small businesses” from disadvantaged populations. ANCs also fund the million-dollar political machine known as “Alaskans Standing Together.” The winners of the spoils are lobbyists, subcontractors, executives and politicians. Sadly, individual Native Alaskan shareholders and taxpayers get the short end of the stick.
