KODIAK — The Bering Sea snow crab and Bristol Bay red king crab seasons open noon Saturday, and Kodiak's St. Herman Harbor was almost bare of large fishing boats Thursday afternoon.

This year's red king crab fishery is down 47 percent from last year, to 7.83 million pounds. That's the lowest level since 1988.

The snow crab season, on the other hand, could be a big one. The allowable catch this year is up 64 percent, to 88.9 million pounds.

Vessel registration for each fishery begins Friday.
