For the opening quarter of Friday night’s game, Kodiak played Wasilla tough on its homecourt.

Unfortunately for the Bears, the Warriors owned the rest of the weekend.

Fourth-ranked Wasilla defeated Kodiak 72-56 and followed that with an 87-62 victory in a pair of Northern Lights Conference boys basketball games at Wasilla High School.

Wasilla extended its winning streak over Kodiak to 17 games, a span that began in the 2003-2004 season.

“They are a quality team,” Kodiak coach David Anderson said.

Wasilla improved to 3-0 in the NLC, 8-1 overall — its only loss coming from a Lower 48 squad. Kodiak, which has lost six of its last eight games, fell to 0-3 in the NLC, and 5-6 overall.

“Losses are not a huge thing,” Anderson said. “It’s what we are learning in the losses. If we play Wasilla in the region tournament, I think we can make the adjustments.”

On Friday, Kodiak trailed Wasilla only by 12-10 after the first quarter.

The Warriors broke the game open in the middle quarters by outscoring the Bears 41-20.

Sophomore Austin Frick made six 3-pointers for a team-high 22 points.

“Austin shot well,” Anderson said. “He had a tremendous game.”

Connor Devine, with his 6-foot-10 frame, dominated in the paint against the smaller Bears with a game-high 27 points. Braydon Kuiper, at 6-foot-6, added 20 points.

On Saturday, Wasilla’s Eric Roberts and Dane Kuiper each drilled five of their team’s 12 3-pointers to hand Kodiak a 25-point loss.

Kuiper led all scorers with 23 points, while Roberts added 21.

“They played a 1-3-1 zone and we scored pretty easy, and then they switched to man-to-man and it just all broke loose,” Anderson said. “They shot lights out and played well. We defended the inside real well.”

Jemuel Medina led Kodiak with 16 points, while Swearingin added 15.

On Friday and Saturday, Kodiak plays at Juneau in a pair of nonconference games.
