Call it a winning streak.

The Kodiak boys earned their first two Northern Lights Conference victories of the season with a pair of come-from-behind wins against Skyview and Homer over the weekend.

On Friday, Kodiak trailed by 10 points in the first half but outscored Skyview 19-9 in the third quarter to roll to a 58-46 win at Skyview.

On Saturday, Kodiak was down by as many as 11 points to Homer in the first half, but rode the back of Jesse Swearingin in the final moments to secure a 45-42 victory at Homer.

Kodiak has won three of its last four games to improve to 2-6 in the NLC, 8-12 overall.

The Bears, though, remain the fourth team in the North Division behind Wasilla (8-0), Colony (5-3) and Palmer (4-3).

Kodiak finishes the regular season with two home NLC games against Palmer.

“We are in the mix of this thing ... and I am hoping we will be peaking at just the right time,” said Kodiak coach David Anderson. “The kids have the right attitude and they are starting to believe in themselves.”

Anderson played with the lineup against Skyview and found his team down 15-5 midway through the second.

Anderson then inserted his starters and the Bears were off and running, evening the score at 22 at halftime and taking a 41-31 lead at the end of the third.

Swearingin led Kodiak with 13 points.

The next night, the senior won it for Kodiak when his layup with 35.5 seconds left gave the Bears a 43-32 lead over Homer.

The Mariners had led by eight points in the final period.

Swearingin, who ended with just five points, added two free throws after his bucket to secure the victory.

“He didn’t score much in the game, but the confidence that he had was huge for us,” Anderson said.

Sophomore Austin Frick led Kodiak with 15 points, which included four straight 3-pointers in the second quarter.
