High School pigskin picks: Hoping for nothing but fastballs in Week 2

As usual, the first week of the high school football season threw me some knuckleballs.

Normally I’m a fan of knuckleballs, especially if they are coming off R.A. Dickey’s fingertips.

However, when it comes to picking games, I just like fastballs down the middle.

I misfired badly on Palmer’s victory over last year’s NLC champion Soldotna, Eielson’s win over medium-school runner-up Homer and Monroe’s victory over Barrow.

I did not count the Nikiski-Delta game, because Delta canceled its football season in early August (I didn’t get the memo). Nikiski replaced Delta with Lathrop and lost.

Minus those blunders, I posted a 7-3 record out of the chute. Not bad, but below my .800 winning percentage I’m aiming for.

I’m hoping for all fastballs in Week 2.

Ketchikan (0-1) at Soldotna (0-1) — One team will emerge from this contest with their first victory. Sorry Kings, but I hope the trip was a lot more fun than the game ... STARS 56, KINGS 7.

Thunder Mt. (0-1) at Sitka (1-0) — Thunder Mountain takes its new triple pistol offense to Sitka and rebounds from last week’s loss in the Glacier Bowl ... FALCONS 28, WOLVES 14.

Homer (0-1) at Barrow (0-1) — Last week Homer traveled to Fairbanks. This week Homer travels to Barrow. The schedule maker must have it out for Homer, however, the Mariners make this trip worthwhile ... MARINERS 21, WHALERS 20.

Seward (0-1) at Eielson (1-0) — Top-ranked Eielson will have no problem against a team that lost to a junior varsity team last week ... RAVENS 45, SEAHAWKS 0.

Valdez (0-1) at Monroe (1-0) — Monroe keeps things rolling in this one ... RAMS 24, BUCCANEERS 6.

Skyview (0-1) at Nikiski (0-1) — Both teams lost to a large school opponent last week, but Nikiski looked better ... BULLDOGS 27, PANTHERS 14.

Kenai (0-1) at Colony (1-0) — Kenai faces its second consecutive large school and it ends with the same result ... KNIGHTS 42, KARDINALS 7.

Houston (1-0) at Kodiak (1-0) — This is the only game of the week that features two 1-0 teams. It’s hard to gauge just how good Kodiak is from its victory over West’s junior varsity squad, but I’m going to go with the home team against the No. 2 ranked team in the state ... BEARS 18, HAWKS 12.
