The Kodiak Police Department reported that 67-year-old Julia Wiley was struck by a motor vehicle on Mill Bay Road.
“Information provided by witnesses revealed Wiley was standing on the corner of Thorshiem and Mill Bay Road waiting to cross the roadway. A vehicle stopped to allow Wiley to cross Mill Bay Road. Wiley ran in to the roadway and was struck by an oncoming Jeep, being driven by 18-year-old Blake Still. Wiley suffered multiple abrasions, a broken leg and multiple fractures to her hips. She was transported to Anchorage for further treatment,” a statement from the police said.
Wiley was Athlete of the Year for Special Olympics Kodiak in 2010 and is known for her strong athletic skills.
Police ticketed Still for having no insurance and failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision.
The passenger in the Jeep with Still, his mother Elizabeth Still, was cited for having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. Investigation revealed neither alcohol nor speed was a factor in Blake Still’s collision with Wiley.
