Traffic on the Chiniak Highway may be held up this evening as blasting connected with the runway safety extension project at Kodiak’s Benny Benson State Airport continues.

Interruptions may occur up to a few times per week during this phase of the state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities project, said Jeff Daly, a project engineer with contractor Kiewit Corp.

“It’s not going to be every day,” he said. “Right now were scheduled through November.”

Blasting will mostly take place after 6 p.m and before 10 p.m. to avoid interfering with airport access at scheduled flight times, Daly said.
