Life is good.

Another week has passed and the Seattle Mariners are still in the playoff hunt.

I’ve forgotten what it is like for your team to be in contention in August — nothing is better than scoreboard watching and sitting on the edge of your seat for every pitch. I even skipped a workout at the gym to watch a morning Mariners game this past week — I also skipped a squat session to keep my legs fresh for a softball game, but that is a story for another time.

Last week’s picks didn’t go as well as I would have liked. I went 7-2 in Week 1 for a sub-par .777 winning percentage.

I underestimated the power of Ketchikan, as they waxed Monroe 51-12. I also overestimated Houston, as they fell to Seward, 14-7.

I won’t get Ketchikan wrong this week, as it lost to North Pole on Wednesday, 45-26.

Week 2

Soldotna (1-0) at Palmer (0-1) — Soldotna picked up its 21st consecutive victory last week and will have no problem increasing the win streak this week against Palmer … STARS 42, MOOSE 21.

Juneau-Douglas (1-0) at Wasilla (0-1) — Juneau rekindles its Railbelt Conference rivalry with Wasilla today in the Mat-Su Valley. The Crimson Bears get the best of the Warriors in this large-school vs. small-school matchup … CRIMSON BEARS 46, WARRIORS 28.

Nikiski (1-0) at Houston (0-1) — Nikiski romped over Thunder Mountain in its opener and will pick up its second consecutive victory over a medium-school team … BULLDOGS 55, HAWKS 7.

Voznesenka (0-0) at Valdez (0-1) — Valdez’s defense and offense didn’t show up last week in a 60-6 loss to Barrow. Things should change this week against a rested Voznesenka … BUCCANEERS 24, COUGARS 14.

Seward (1-0) at Eielson (1-0) — The only battle of undefeated teams in the medium-small school classifications happens on Saturday in Fairbanks. Seward’s undefeated season ends, while Eielson remains perfect … RAVENS 45, SEAHAWKS 7.

Monroe (0-1) at Barrow (1-0) — Barrow will continue its offensive onslaught against a Monroe team that surrendered 51 points to Ketchikan … WHALERS 60, RAMS 14.

Kenai (0-1) at Lathrop (0-1) — Kenai’s tour around the state continues this week. Last week, the Kardinals lost at Juneau and this week they head to Fairbanks to play Lathrop. This trip ends with a W … KARDINALS 35, MALEMUTES 24.

Sitka (0-0) at Thunder Mountain (0-1) — Thunder Mountain got rolled by Nikiski last week and will rebound against Sitka … FALCONS 35, WOLVES 14.

Homer (0-1) at Kodiak (0-1) — Kodiak’s offense will look better against a Homer squad that lost to Eielson, 41-16, last week. Look for Melvin Javier to run wild against the Mariners … BEARS 35, MARINERS 12.
